What is a cranial prosthesis?

It is the medical term for a wig worn because of medical hair loss, such as from chemotherapy, radiation or alopecia. The distinction matters because insurers and the tax system often treat a "wig" as cosmetic and a cranial prosthesis as a medical device. Same piece, different word, very different outcome on a claim.

Does insurance cover a medical wig in Canada?

Many private and group plans reimburse part or all of the cost, but coverage varies widely by plan, so call your insurer and ask before you buy. Use the term cranial prosthesis, not wig. Ask what they reimburse, whether you pay upfront and claim back, how many they cover per year, and what documents they need. A common note for Quebec residents: some national plans that advertise wig coverage apply it only outside Quebec, so confirm your own policy rather than trusting a general statement.

What documents do I need?

Usually three. A prescription or letter of medical necessity from your oncologist or physician that states the diagnosis and uses the words cranial prosthesis. A detailed, itemized receipt from your provider describing the piece as a medical-grade cranial prosthesis. And your insurer's completed claim form. We provide receipts worded for this purpose.

Is it tax deductible?

In Canada, the cost you pay out of pocket for a prescribed medical wig can count toward the medical expense tax credit. Federally, eligible medical expenses are claimed on the amount exceeding the lesser of 3% of your net income or a fixed threshold set each year. Quebec applies its own medical expense credit as well. You can only claim the portion not reimbursed by insurance. Keep your prescription and receipts, and speak to an accountant for your specific situation. This is general information, not tax advice.

When should I buy, before or after my hair falls?

If you can, come before. Matching your natural colour and style is much easier while your own hair is still there, and the transition feels gentler. Practically, it also means your piece is ready the moment you want it.
